I’m pro-perv. Hooray for nudity! And in general, hooray for gratuitousness of whatever sort: sex, violence, spectacle, general weirdness. All art is gratuitous when compared to the strictly necessary — that’s what makes it art — and I think scaring or arousing or weirding people out for no reason other than that it’s fun to do so is a marvelous thing. I just wish there were more naked dudes, is all.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it all. I have nothing against nudity and sex in context — and there’s plenty of context in the books themselves. And even gratuitous nudity has its place in art, as you said. I really am glad that a pay-cable company is producing the show, so that both the sex and the violence could be kept intact. (ref GRRM’s quote about the American audience having no problem with axes entering skulls vs. freaking out about a penis entering a vagina)

But Game of Thrones wants to be looked at as quality. And unfortunately it became most famous not for its groundbreaking deconstruction of fantasy tropes and demonstration of the true brutality of medieval life (among the many things that make ASOIAF so different and cool), but for the somewhat laughable concept of “sexposition”. And that interview, showing that SNL’s satire actually has basis — that there actually is an executive who looks at a scene and says “needs more boobs” — that’s just stunning to realize.

TBH, the fact that the gender imbalance and the male gaze have been almost OTT this season (though very little could compare with last season’s “play with her ass” scene) is probably why I’m creeped out about it. More balance to the nudity would at least be groundbreaking and not just wank material.

(Gosh, I keep reblogging you today. Er, sorry?)

edit: see this post in particular for why that “executive pervert” is such a frustrating and problematic thing.

I agree with all of the above. I’m all for nudity, but let’s have balance. Also, showing naked women surrounded by fully-clothed men really bothers me.

Exactly! Sorry to randomly barge in on somebody’s conversation, but it’s not the presence of nudity is bothersome - it’s the fact that it seems to be entirely or mainly male-gaze-focused nudity, with emphasis on titillation for male viewers. The writing and production staff seems overwhelmingly male.

Ultimately, I want the emphasis on story - I don’t mind if there’s sex in the story, although I would say that I do object to sex scenes that feel WTF (“play with her ass” being the primary example) and to the massive imbalance between male and female nudity. (Also, more consensual sex would be great - Asha and Qarl, Sam and Gilly, Jon and Ygritte, etc., not just all of the rapes and attempted rapes and sex-worker violence.)

But, as people above me have said more eloquently, the idea that there is a male executive saying “I’m the pervy straight male viewer, add more porn for me!” without an idea of why this is problematic is a major issue for me.

It ties into other things HBO has done - their character treatment of Catelyn Stark being the big one, as well as Sansa’s majorly reduced arc this season - that make me feel uneasy about how the staff is treating women and their storylines in general. Displaying naked women because an exec wants to add things for the “perv” in the audience while simultaneously taking away from female story arcs and characters really disturbs me.

Yes, adding nudity just for the sake of having it is not cool. That’s one of the very few flaws I see in this series (the others being related to my book fandom, changes such as Asha’s new name and such).
